Women's White Gold Wedding Rings

Rhodium plating is what gives white gold its bright, cool white finish, over a base of gold alloyed with white metals. The plating is a surface layer, so it wears with use and needs restoring periodically.

That matters more when two rings share a finger. Where a band and an engagement ring press together, the plating goes first at the contact point. If the engagement ring is platinum, the two will also drift apart in tone, because platinum holds its colour without plating while white gold warms up as the rhodium thins. A pair that looked identical on the wedding day can end up looking like two different shades of white a few years later.

Treat them as a set. Send both rings in together so they are re-plated and serviced at the same time. They come back matching, rather than one looking freshly plated while the other shows wear. Servicing at Harry & Co is complimentary.

Profile decides how closely the two sit. A straight band works against an engagement ring with a flat base. A curved or fitted band is cut to follow the profile of an engagement ring where the setting extends over the band, which is custom work. Platinum is the alternative if you would rather skip plating altogether.

Karat changes the metal itself. 9kt carries the most alloy and is the hardest of the three. 18kt is softer, with the richest colour under the plating, and 14kt sits between them.

The collection ranges from plain polished bands through to fully stone-set designs, and the widths vary more than the photographs suggest. Curve is a plain band with a gentle curve, shaped to sit flush against low-set and high-set engagement rings. Margot is one of several claw-set diamond wedding rings in the grid. Narrower profiles are generally more comfortable if you plan to wear two bands together.

Finish changes how the plating ages. A high polish dulls evenly across the surface. A brushed finish tends to hide wear for longer, before gradually becoming smoother in the areas that see the most contact. Pavé and channel-set stones sit directly against plated metal, so re-plating a diamond-set band is specialist work rather than a quick dip.

For the same design, white gold costs less than platinum, because the metal itself costs less rather than because the making is lighter. It's a straightforward trade-off: you pay less up front, but white gold will need re-plating over the years.
