CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition) places the seed in a vacuum chamber filled with carbon-rich gas heated to extreme temperatures, where carbon atoms settle onto the seed layer by layer. Once grown, the stone is cut and polished by hand, then graded and certified to the same standards as a mined diamond.

They score an identical 10 on the Mohs scale, meaning they're equally durable over a lifetime of daily wear. Under light, they reflect and refract the same way, with the same sparkle and fire. A gemmologist can't distinguish them from natural ones without specialised laboratory equipment. The jewellery industry grades both to the same 4C scale: cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight.

Where they diverge is price and environmental impact. Lab grown diamonds cost between 30% and 70% less than a mined diamond of equivalent size and quality. For many couples, spending less money on lab grown diamonds and putting more toward the setting or the wedding itself is part of the appeal. Lab grown diamonds are also free from the environmental disruption and labour practice concerns associated with mining.
