Harry and Co. Jewellery in Adelaide offers every piece in our collection with the option of a lab grown diamond. You can select it on any product page when you place your order, shop online through our website, or come into our Hyde Park studio to see stones in person and talk to a consultant before you decide.
Lab created diamonds are chemically and visually identical to natural diamonds. Same carbon structure, same brilliance. The difference is where they come from; a laboratory rather than the ground. They cost less, they sidestep the environmental concerns tied to mining, and once they're on your hand, nobody (including a jeweller) can tell them apart from a mined stone without specialised equipment.

See Our Lab Grown Diamonds at Our Adelaide Showroom
We're based in Adelaide, and the best way to understand what a lab grown diamond looks like is to see one up close. When you book a consultation, you'll sit down with our friendly team of jewellers and look at stones side by side. Lab grown next to natural, different shapes, different carat weights. You can hold them, compare them under light, and ask as many questions as you need to. There's no rush and no pressure to make a purchase on the spot.
If you already have a design in mind, bring reference photos or sketches. If you have no idea where to start, that's fine too. Most people don't. For anyone outside Adelaide, you can also book a virtual appointment over video.
How Are Lab Grown Diamonds Made?
Every lab grown diamond starts with a tiny carbon seed. From there, it goes through one of two processes. HPHT (High Pressure, High Temperature) places the seed inside a press with pure graphite carbon and subjects it to high pressure and extreme heat, replicating conditions deep within the Earth's mantle. CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition) places the seed in a vacuum chamber filled with carbon-rich gas heated to extreme temperatures, where carbon atoms settle onto the seed layer by layer. Both processes rely on advanced technology to compress what happens underground over millions of years into about six to ten weeks. Once grown, the stone is cut and polished by hand, then graded and certified to the same standards as a mined diamond.
Lab Grown vs Natural Diamonds: What's Actually Different?
Origin. That's all. Lab grown diamonds possess the same physical and chemical properties as mined stones, with identical beauty and durability. They score an identical 10 on the Mohs scale, meaning they're equally durable over a lifetime of daily wear. Under light, they reflect and refract the same way, with the same sparkle and fire. A gemmologist can't distinguish them from natural ones without specialised laboratory equipment. The jewellery industry grades both to the same 4C scale: cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight.
Where they diverge is price and environmental impact. Lab grown diamonds cost between 30% and 70% less than a mined diamond of equivalent size and quality. For many couples, spending less money on lab grown diamonds and putting more toward the setting or the wedding itself is part of the appeal. Lab grown diamonds are also free from the environmental disruption and labour practice concerns associated with mining.
Mined diamonds have historically held their resale value differently. If that matters to you, it's a conversation worth having with our team. We sell both and we'd rather give you the full picture than push you toward either one.
Certified and Custom Made
Our lab grown diamonds are graded by the IGI or GIA and each stone receives a certificate detailing cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. They're also laser-inscribed on the girdle with the report number, giving you security and a permanent record tied to your specific stone. The best lab grown diamonds score high across all four Cs, just like their mined counterparts.
Because lab grown diamonds cost less, you have more budget flexibility when it comes to customisation options. Our expert designers work with you from the first conversation, and our skilled artisans craft each piece by hand with precision. We custom make diamond engagement rings, wedding bands, and lab grown diamond jewellery, all available with lab grown diamonds.
Common Questions About Lab Grown Diamonds
Do lab grown diamonds look different from natural diamonds?
No. They're optically identical. The only way to tell them apart is with specialised equipment.
How much cheaper are lab grown diamonds?
Between 30% and 70% less than a mined diamond of the same size and quality, depending on carat weight, clarity, and colour.
Will a lab grown diamond last?
Yes. Unlike other gemstones, lab grown diamonds score 10 out of 10 on the Mohs scale. There is no difference in durability or how the stone wears over the life of the ring.
Are lab grown diamonds ethical?
They don't involve mining, which removes the associated environmental and labour concerns. The laboratory process uses energy, but the footprint is significantly smaller.
How are lab grown diamonds graded?
By independent laboratories (IGI and GIA) using the 4C framework. Each stone receives a certificate and laser inscription linking it to its grading report.
