An interesting history of Moissanite

Moissanite is a relatively new mineral that our designers at Harry & Co have fallen in love with for its vibrant shimmer and striking looks. The source of this unique gem goes back almost 50,000 years when a meteor crashed into the Arizona desert. After the impact, the now famous ‘meteor crater’ was formed and the space rock was strewn across the desert floor.

It wasn’t until 1893 that we discovered this scarred area of desert and the beautiful gems hidden beneath the surface. Henri Moissan was the first scientist to study this area and in the process, he began to discover fragments of a strange mineral that had broken off from the meteorite.

Dr Moissan was simply captivated by this beautiful mineral that contained vibrant colours the likes of which he had never seen in minerals before. Thus began a long period of research that led Dr Moissan to the conclusion that this sparkling gem was actually silicon carbide. It wasn’t until 1905 that it received a proper name - Moissanite - after the man who discovered it.

Naturally occurring Moissanite is incredibly rare and only found in tiny quantities, which is why it took over 100 years for us to start using it for jewellery. Today, it’s one of the most sought-after gems thanks to its beautiful aesthetic and intriguing past.
