Platinum is naturally white and heavy, around 60% denser than 18kt gold, and it grips a centre stone securely through years of daily wear. That durability comes at a price. A platinum ring usually costs 30% to 50% more than the same design in 18-karat gold, so on a fixed budget, choosing platinum often means a slightly smaller stone.

White gold gives a similar cool, white colour for less, though it is mixed with other metals and finished with a rhodium plating that needs redoing every two to three years to stay bright. Yellow gold and rose gold hold their colour without that upkeep and suit warmer skin tones, with rose gold in particular lending a softer, slightly vintage feel.
