- Represents the entire diamond value chain
- Includes representatives from mining, manufacturing, trading, and retail
- Established in July 2000
- Aims to keep the diamond supply chain free from conflict diamonds
- Played a key role in the creation of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme
Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS)
- Adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2000
- Created through negotiations between governments, diamond industry, and civil society organizations
- Sets out requirements for controlling rough diamond production and trade
- Entered into force in 2003
- Credited with reducing conflict diamonds to less than 1% of global diamond production
Influence of the World Diamond Council
- Has representation on all Kimberley Process working groups
- Influential in determining implementation and future reform of the Kimberley Process
- Headquartered in the United States
- Led by President Edward Asscher from Amsterdam, Netherlands
- Charter members include the World Federation of Diamond Bourses, International Diamond Manufacturers Association, and International Confederation of Jewellers
