• Double diamond with a second diamond moving freely inside
• Mined in Yakutia at the Nyurba mining and processing division of Alrosa
• Resembles a traditional Russian Matryoshka doll
• First such diamond in the history of world diamond mining until October 2019
• Maximum size of the diamond: 4.8 × 4.9 × 2.8mm

• Volume of the internal cavity: 6 mm³
• Internal crystal volume: 1.6 mm³
• Estimated weight of the internal diamond: 0.02 carats (0.004 grams)
• Inner diamond size: 1.9 × 2.1 × 0.6mm
• Studied by a complex of methods, including Raman spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy

Formation of Matryoshka Diamond

• Inner diamond appeared before the external diamond
• Two hypotheses proposed to explain the formation of the external diamond
• Research conducted by the Research and Development Geological Enterprise of Alrosa
